Everything you need to know about the Volcano Hybrid

The Volcano by Storz & Bickel is one of the most iconic vaporizers of all time. With its volcano-shaped base and plastic plume full of vapor, this desktop vaporizer went viral before going viral was a thing.  Having permeated stoner culture in the late 90s and early 2000s, it remained nestled in the soft folds of our collective nostalgia, frozen in the ashes of the past like Tamagotchis, low-rise denim, and the ancient city of Pompeii. That is, until the respected vape gods at Storz & Bickel delivered us the Volcano Hybrid, a sleek, smart, and future forward upgrade that's getting the cannabis industry erupting with excitement once more. By toning down the hokey-ness of the original design — without making the device too serious — and adding intuitive technological controls, the Volcano Hybrid feels like a grown-up version of the classic model.  Just as the past twenty years saw us mature and make it to the other side smarter, cooler, and (much) better looking, so it did our trusty old friend. Here's everything you need to know about the Volcano Hybrid.  What is the Volcano Hybrid vaporizer? The Volcano Hybrid is a flower vaporizing system with a volcano-shaped base that uses convection heat to vaporize ground material. In the original design, a large plastic easy-valve balloon bag was filled with vapor before being inhaled and passed around. While the Volcano Hybrid obviously does this as well, it also includes a tube kit to take the silliness of the giant vapor bag out of the equation, letting you hit it like a normal vaping system.  Aside from technological upgrades like LED controls, app capability and other trimmings that take it from the analog age to our current digital era, the addition of the tube kit is the biggest change to the overall aesthetic and functionality of the device. It elevates the Volcano experience, and this elevation particularly lends itself to a Storz & Bickel device, as they produce some of the highest quality vaporizers on the market that are specifically designed for everyday use.  What can you vape with the Volcano Hybrid? The Volcano Hybrid is compatible with finely ground flower, and also contains a drip pad for use with concentrates.   How do you use the Volcano Hybrid? Now that you're familiar with the Volcano Hybrid, how does it work? Parts Volcano base (hot air generator) Drip pad Normal screen set Easy valve balloon with mouthpiece  Tube kit Filling chamber with cap  Assembly of the tube and balloon elements Plug in the Volcano base making sure you put the Volcano on a sturdy, level surface near an outlet. Remove the filling chamber cap. Unscrew the top from the bottom. Grind flower. Make sure the flower is ground completely so the hot air has as little surface area to vaporize when the air moves through as possible.  Fill the chamber with the ground flower, then screw on the filing chamber cap. Do not fill too tightly, it should be loose enough for air to pass through easily, not completely packed. Attach tube kit or balloon to the top of the filling chamber.  How to use the tube kit Tap the heat button to turn on. Choose temperature using the (+) and (-) buttons. Preheat for 5 seconds — it will vibrate when ready. Tap the air button. Inhale from tube mouthpiece. How to use the balloon Tap the heat button to turn on. Choose temperature using the (+) and (-) buttons. Preheat for 5 seconds — will vibrate when ready. Tap the air button. Stay conscious of vapor density in the balloon. It's important that the balloon does not become too full of vapor, if it's getting taught to the touch it's time to stop filling. Remove the full balloon unit. Never leave the filling chamber on the Volcano — beware, as this is a very hot surface.  Attach the mouthpiece to the valve on the balloon. Inhale — passing optional. Temperature controls The Volcano Hybrid arrives set to 356°F, which is a great place to start since the ideal temperature to vaporize ground flower is around 350°F. While it's true that the higher the vaporization temperature, the faster the person vaporizing may experience their high, it kind of negates the entire point of vaping in the first place. Not only do you sacrifice important factors like flavor and vapor smoothness, it's easy to scorch the flower and eviscerate all the terpenes this method of intake is designed to preserve.  Note that when using the tube, it's a way more intense delivery method than the balloon, so keep the temperature around 350°F to ensure the best-quality vapor and overall experience.  Storz & Bickel App If you have an Android, the Storz & Bickel App is pretty cool. You can control your Volcano Hybrid, get firmware updates, adjust auto shutoff, create workflows, and personalize settings. However, if you don't have an Android 6 or above, there is a web version users can access.  Is the Volcano Hybrid worth it? The appeal of the Volcano Hybrid is that it's a really fun and well-executed upgrade of one of stoner culture's favorite vaporizers. While it has hugely improved tech-wise, it's still a really simple and straight-forward device, making it great for any level of user from novice to expert. The improvement on the analog version made it better and more current without all the unnecessary tech-y add ons.  With the addition of the tube, the Volcano ascends from the hazy den of your parent's house to the coffee table of your very chic and adult apartment. Potent, discreet, and sexy, the Volcano Hybrid's all grown up.  Find the Volcano Hybrid on storz-bickel.com.

Everything you need to know about the Plenty Vaporizer

Portable vaporizers may be all the rage, but there's something to be said for an at-home system — especially during lockdown. While desktop vapes and plug-in devices ruled the market in the 90s and 2000s, they're now few and far between, and usually on the pricier side.  It's rare to find an at-home flower vape that works well and doesn't break the bank. But to find one that also — and perhaps most importantly — dominates every conversation and smoke sesh with its unnerving size and bizarro aesthetic? Look no further than beloved German vaporizer brand Storz and Bickel's wildest contraption yet: the Plenty Vaporizer.  With its power drill aesthetic, giant vapor stainless steel cooling coil, and thick, potent clouds, the Plenty looks like a piece of machinery (and hits like one too). This balance of wacky design and unmatched quality is typical of Storz and Bickel, whose similarly bombastic Volcano Vaporizer pioneered desktop devices in the 90s. Whimsical yet industrial, their products have a sense of humor that pairs perfectly with the stoner they're getting high.  The most affordable option from this premium brand, the Plenty Vaporizer shines in its analog simplicity, gonzo vibe, and claims of producing some of the coolest vapor on the market.  Below, here's everything you need to know about the Plenty. What is the Plenty Vaporizer? The Plenty is a handheld vaporizer from the German brand Storz and Bickel that resembles a power drill. In addition to its perfectly sized flower chamber and protruding coil that cools vapor, the Plenty is loved for its simplicity. With no LED whistles or app-capable bells, the Plenty is one of the safest bets on the market, and the most affordable.   While all Storz and Bickel vaporizers are lauded for their fabulous construction and vapor quality, they're generally super expensive — especially the larger units. Coming in at $249, the Plenty Vaporizer is a great way for casual users to experience the power and class of a top tier vapor brand at a fraction of the cost of other Storz and Bickel's at-home devices.   With this functionally pared down device, just plug the Plenty in, set the temperature control, and hit. The coil will keep the vapor cool no matter how hard or fast you vape. The potent and dense vapor it consistently produced had almost a menthol-like quality from the cooling function, and I was a bit taken aback by how powerful the device was. Whereas most flower vapes give you an experience that is decidedly underwhelming, this device got me so high it was almost a bit much. What can you vape with the Plenty? The Plenty Vaporizer is compatible with ground flower and includes an additional liquid pad for concentrates.  How do you use the Plenty? Using the Plenty Vaporizer is easy, follow the steps below for a streamlined experience:  Parts: 1 pc. PLENTY Vaporizer 1 pc. vaporization unit 1 pc. tubing section, long 1 pc. tubing section, short 3 pcs. normal screen (approx. Ø 30 mm) 1 pc. drip pad (approx. Ø 28 x 4 mm) 1 pc. herb mill (approx. Ø 59 mm) 1 pc. cleaning brush 1 pc. Instructions for Use Basic operation: Open filling chamber. Grind flower. Fill chamber with ground flower —be sure to fill the chamber completely up to the upper edge to ensure proper vaporization. Switch on the device (orange power switch). Press auto off release handle. Temperature settings on the numeric dial: 1: 266 degrees 2: 288 degrees 3: 310 degrees 4: 331 degrees  5: 352 degrees  6: 374 degrees 7: 396 degrees Set dial number to desired vaporization temperature. Inhale. Is the Plenty Vaporizer worth it? The Plenty is a great vaporizer to fall in love with during winter lockdown, as long as you're the right match for this very unique device. While its design definitely doesn't appeal to everyone, its functionality will, as it's a beautifully constructed device and one of the hardest-hitting flower vapes on the market.  Initially, you may think needing to plug in your vaporizer is a drawback, but this throwback feature has its upsides too. For one, it will never die. You'll never lose the charger, or the vaporizer itself for that matter. And, with close to no heat up time, it's ready to go whenever you are.  And let's be honest, none of us are going anywhere anyways. You might as well invest in a wacky gift to yourself that will make sitting around getting high in your living room for months on end feel whimsical again. Sometimes good things come in strange spackages, and this is one of those times. The Plenty Vaporizer gives you plenty to love — and even more to talk about.  Find the Plenty Vaporizer on storz-bickel.com.

Everything you need to know about the Crafty+

As the vaporizer market continues to explode, it seems that most brands are focused on producing devices that are flashy and futuristic, as opposed to reliable and well-made. While features like endless controls and LED light shows make sense for extract vaporizers and the hypebeast culture they predicate, flower vapes cater to a different mentality, one that is a little slower and more thoughtful.  If concentrate vapes are about blasting off, flower vapes are about savoring the experience. They tend to attract those who enter the cannabis market from a wellness angle, as opposed to those looking to obliterate themselves. Part of this is due to the fact that vaporizing is better for you, mentally and physically, than smoking.  When you vaporize flower, you're boiling the high-inducing chemical compounds like terpenes and cannabinoids at optimal temperatures, as opposed to eviscerating them with a lighter. Not only is it easier on the lungs, it doesn't make you smell, generally lending itself to a more discreet consumer. The best flower vaporizers are simple, because that's all they need to be.  One of the most trusted brands in the industry, Storz & Bickel, nailed it with their stunning new Crafty+, an updated version of their original Crafty flower vape. With its survivalist aesthetic, pared down functioning skills, and impressive capability, this is the perfect device for the enthusiast on the go.  What is the Crafty+? The Crafty+ is a compact and portable flower vaporizer by respected European vape brand Storz & Bickel. With a simple yet effective design, this device reduces the act of vaping flower to its most basic form.  Similar to the much larger Storz & Bickel Mighty, the Crafty+ is ready to go with perfected factory settings. Literally all you have to do is insert your ground flower, press a button, and get high.  Upgrades from the original Crafty include a 30% faster heat-up time, a new design for optimized grip, and “super boost” function where triple pressing the power button takes you to the max temperature of 410°F. There is also an app for Android users for further customization — but more on that later.  At the crux of the Crafty+'s stellar performance record is its patented hybrid heat exchanger. By combining conduction and convection heat, then filtering the vapor through a cooling element in the mouth piece, this device keeps temperatures stable, resulting in a laid back and flavorful experience that never burns your lungs.  Storz & Bickel What can you vape with the Crafty+? The Crafty+ is compatible with ground flower and includes a drip pad for concentrate use. How do you use the Crafty+? Now that you're familiar with the Crafty+ vaporizer, how does it work? Parts: 1 pc. CRAFTY+ Vaporizer 1 pc. USB Cable 3 pcs. base seal ring, small 3 pcs. normal screen, small 3 pcs. coarse screen, small 2 pcs. drip pad, small 1 pc. dosing capsule 1 pc. cleaning brush Basic operation: Charge fully before use using the USB cable. Unscrew cooling unit from the vaporizer by turning it 90 degrees counter-clockwise. Fill the chamber with ground flower up to the plastic rim — do not overfill. Screw the cooling unit onto the vaporizer by turning it back 90 degrees clockwise. Switch on vaporizer. Red LED light indicates device is heating up. Green LED means it's ready for use. Inhale. The Crafty+ App While the Crafty+ arrives ready to go and shines in its implementation of easy-to-use one button controls, there is also a Storz & Bickel smartphone app available for Android users. And though the Storz & Bickel app is not currently available in the app store, there is a WebApp for Apple users as well.   The Remote Control App allows you to customize different settings, like temperature control, shutoff timer, brightness, and various alerts. While the app is definitely a cool feature, it's not a must. The device works perfectly with its basic factory settings. Any further customization would simply be a matter of preference.  Is the Crafty+ worth it? Coming in at $279, the Crafty+ does fall on the pricier end of the vaporizing spectrum. However, given its years-long warranty, reliable design, and a battery powerful enough to vape for 40 minutes on a full charge (up to five or six full sessions), makes this device totally worth it.  My favorite thing about the device is the simplicity of the design. Resembling binoculars, it has a super discreet, kind of spy gadget feel. In a backpack or bag of similar outdoorsy items, no one would peg this for a vaporizer.  From it's internal function to its external aesthetic, this is a cohesive device that delivers on the wellness-angled stoner lifestyle it indicates. Perfect for nature lovers, medicinal users, and those looking to give their lungs a much deserved break, the Crafty+ proves the age old notion that less is more.  Find the Crafty+ vaporizer on storz-bickel.com Featured image courtesy of Storz & Bickel

The best portable dab rigs

The rise of portable e-rigs completely revolutionized dab culture. Prior to technology redefining this genre over the past decade, dabbing was considered a sketchy corner of cannabis consumption, nothing like the futuristic market we see today.  In all honesty, traditional dabbing was kind of sketchy. From the giant torche and the red hot rig, to the anonymous black goo of the early dab days, there was plenty not to love. Despite being one of the most effective and cleanest ways to consume cannabis, questionable factors like these alienated most casual and new consumers. Since devices like e-rigs and electric dab straws made dabbing more accessible, concentrates — and the devices that vaporize them — have become the fastest growing facet of the weed market. The devices are beautiful, sleek, and user friendly. And as for the concentrates themselves, it's way better to take a clean hit of extract than it is to take a lung-wrecking bong rip.  Dabbing on the go is even more discreet. While the smell of smoke lingers, vapor's gone in an instant. To celebrate these game-changing devices, here are the best portable dab rigs on the market today.  Puffco Peak Pro Puffco One of the most influential cannabis products of all time, the Peak by Puffco pioneered the electronic dab rig. With its chic, simple design, consuming concentrates became as easy as pushing a button at a time when torches and rigs ruled the market.  Puffco recently released its follow up, the Puffco Peak Pro, where upgrades focus on future-forward details like app-compatibility and wireless charging, without eclipsing the simplicity of the original design. The hottest device on the market, the Peak Pro has it all, as long as you can afford the $400 price tag. Price: $399.99 Dr Dabber Switch Dr. Dabber Another device that's worth the splurge, the Switch by Dr. Dabber, is a stellar option that is compatible with both extract and flower. After using mine for over a year in tandem with all other devices on this list, I can say the Switch has the most powerful battery and delivers hits that are closest in potency and vapor density to traditional torch dabbing.  While the device is technically portable, it's not exactly the kind of thing you would bring out and about. Part of the reason it's so powerful is due to its huge battery and elaborate glass bubbler. It's more of an at-home portable device, great for getting high in lockdown.  Price: $399.95 Huni Badger Electric Nectar Collector Delux Kit Another fabulous device that I would classify as an around-the-home-portable is the Huni Badger Delux Kit by Nectar Collector.  Nectar Collector, the brand behind the eponymous OG dab straw, debuts a brand new take on the electronic dab straw. This little dude packs a serious punch, truly delivering on their promise of a torchless dab experience. And with its heady glass attachments, hardcore carrying case, and general sense of prowess, it's worth springing for the Delux Kit edition.  Price: $449.99 X Vape Vista Mini 2 The amount of power packed into this affordable little e-rig is truly shocking. At $159, you get the full e-rig experience, complete with water filtration, at a fraction of the cost of most of its competitors. While it doesn't heat quite as evenly as some of the expensive options on this list, it's a killer option for the casual consumer. Price: $159 Exxus VRS The Exxus VRS is a multi-use concentrate vaporizer for the versatile stoner on the go. It functions as a dab straw with water filtration, an e-nail dab rig attachment, and a cartridge vape pen — there's no end to the combinations of consumption one can dream up.  Having tried a number of versatile e-nail type products with little luck, I was downright shocked by how well this device works. It fully slaps and provides dab-esque vapor potency in every position. Price: $119.99 Dr Dabber Boost EVO  Dr. Dabber The Boost EVO takes a nuanced approach to providing you the perfect dabbing experience. By spending years gathering customer feedback and building proprietary technology, Dr Dabber created a device that is all about temperature control.  Unlike normal e-rigs that heat up to a point then shut off, their patent-pending temperature control sensor keeps you dialed in throughout your session, complete with six temperature settings to choose from. A fantastic option on our list, it hits like a dream, and is slightly more affordable than comparable devices.  Price: $329.95 Dip Devices Evri For a deeply portable take on the electronic dab straw, look no further than the Dip Devices Evri. This insanely versatile product lets you consume in three ways: extracts through the dab straw, 710 vape cartridges through the battery, and a chamber for refillable oil pods.  This is a reliable and super affordable device that is a great intro to dabbing for those who are curious, but maybe not ready to splurge on a full rig just yet.  Price: $69.99 Dab Tech Elite Plus Simple and sexy, the Elite Plus by Dab Tech is all about power. With an insane 3000MAH internal battery, this little electric rig heats all the way from 280 - 800°F with the simple click of a button. Small enough to stow almost anywhere, and strong enough to take up to 40 dabs on a single charge, this inexpensive option is a stand out.  Price: $199.99 Kandy Pens Oura Odyssey  This highly limited, highly psychedelic edition of the popular Oura e-rig by Kandy Pens does not disappoint. With the simple touch of a power sensor, the Oura Odyssey delivers consistent, hard hitting vapor in four temperature settings.  As powerful as it is eye-catching, the Oura is a good buy, it's a pared down, albeit comparable,  alternative to some of the more expensive options on the market.  Price: $369.95 Featured image courtesy of Puffco

4 weed brands Chris Barone can't live without

The world of extracts is not only the fastest growing sector of the cannabis industry, it's also the least understood. Due to intimidating factors like lofty chemistry and extreme potency, concentrates tend to scare off new users before they even have the chance to experience one of the safest and most practical ways to consume cannabis.  The science behind extracts is difficult to dumb down, and tends to confuse almost everyone outside of the people who are involved in the industry. From the different types of extraction methods, to the rosins, resins, badders and butters, it's a lot to keep straight. While developments in electronic gadgets — as well as the extracts themselves — have begun to make dabbing more accessible, it's an industry that moves forward in leaps and bounds through constant technological advancements. The unsung heroes who figure out the science behind what gets us so high are people like Chris Barone.  Barone's revolutionary extraction process Chris Barone is an extract legend who revolutionized dab culture when he came out with a process called distillation and a product called “The Clear.”  “If you were to take a time machine back a few years to 2013, all of the hash oil on the market was an extracted product of kind of shitty quality,” Barone told Weedmaps. “Unless it was really fresh material, you'd get these very dark colored oils. You know, 50 - 60% THC. Some odd flavors. Dab culture hadn't taken off as much yet.”  He continued, “As a chemist it was like, 'how can we purify this THC and make it better?' Distillation at the time was something no one was doing. So out of nowhere we start producing kilos and kilos of this pristine, light yellow-colored oil.”  The original THC distillate, The Clear, is respected for its purity and status as genre trailblazer. The brand continues to expand, currently focusing on their line of flavored cartridges. Barone, who holds a degree in chemistry from Northeastern University and, prior to cannabis, had a background working in pharmaceutical chemistry, continues to push the boundaries of extract technology, this time in the realm of cryogenics.  “I've been working on building a business that is utilizing cryogenic separations. We're building these big pieces of machinery that will fresh harvest cannabis and separate the resin glands from the plant material.” Barone believes cryogenic spearations to be the future of solventless extraction. “Basically, you take a plant, chop it down, and submerge it in liquid nitrogen so it freezes. Now it's completely brittle and you can break that material down into smaller pieces and sift out all of the resin. After harvest I would have barrels and barrels of somewhat purified resin, which I could then go back in and clean up more.”  Chris Barone's favorite weed When it comes to the future of extracts, Barone believes the evolution of the cannabis consumer is as important as the evolution of the technology. “As the extract market matures, we're going to see more sophistication both in processing and in the [consumer]. If you look at it like alcohol, there's a significant number of people who will go out and buy Grey Goose as opposed to Popov. Once consumers understand the difference, the same thing is going to happen with extracts.”  Here are the weed brands Chris Barone can't live without.  IC Collective “For flower, my go-to is IC Collective,” said Barone of the Oakland collective that cultivates unique and award winning strains. “They're the purveyors of Chem '91. They're super old school and have done a bunch of really nice crosses off the Chemdawg. All of their flowers are incredible. I'm all about it.”   Find IC Collective on Weedmaps Single Source Colorado “I'm really into single-source hash and gravitate towards all the great independent hash makers out there,” said Barone. “My personal favorite is a guy by the name of Ken Wall. He works with a group called Single Source out of Colorado. They do a bunch of single-source solventless products. You know, make a bunch of really good hash.”  The Clone Guy  “Recently, I had some really good buds from a craft grower by the name of The Clone Guy in Long Beach,” said Barone. “I really just like craft growers, unique strains, and stuff not everybody has. That's what I get the most enjoyment out of.”  He continued, “I stay away from corporate cannabis for people who don't really get it. For me it's always been about the quality and the flavor, and having someone to enjoy cannabis with. Good hash and good flower bring people together, that's always been my experience. The Clear Last, but not least, The Clear, of course. Barone's brand currently offers carts, syringes, extract and disposable vapes of their famous distillate, with the 17 varieties of flavored carts being a brand focus. “The Grapevine and the blue razz are my favorite non cannabis flavors. And as for the non-flavored, the lemon haze is one of the greats.” Featured graphic by David Lozada/Weedmaps. Photos courtesy of Grasslands.
