Trump’s marijuana stance continues to teeter back and forth with a new rider signed into law.
To be fair, this was part of a much larger spending bill and he may not have completely been aware of its existence. Also, it’s not a new law going into place, but a continuation of the prohibition put into place years ago.
Part of the large scale legislation that will fund the government is SEC. 809, a sales rider that prohibits any sales or possession of any Schedule I drug. This was clearly targeted at marijuana, but with the expected reduction to Schedule III, the rider will have no authority over marijuana. This would mean either new language would have to be added to the rider, or marijuana possession would become legal in Washington D.C., having been approved by voters in 2014.
The main sponsor of this rider, Representative Andy Harris from Maryland, could potentially lose his election in November due to redistricting in his state, so the days of this blockage may be numbered.
