Company that injects CBD is getting in trouble

It’s probably not a great look to take CBD through intravenous infusion, but turns out it’s also illegal.

Pico IV is a company in California that sells CBD through injection. It’s supposed to help with chronic pain, Crohn’s disease, and arthritis.

The FDA sent the company a letter saying that by marketing CBD as a dietary supplement and then injecting it is not okay considering a dietary supplement is supposed to be ingested.

The letter goes on to say “Your “Pico IV” product is especially concerning from a public health perspective because injectable drug products can pose risks of serious harm to users. Injectable products are delivered directly into the body and therefore bypass some of the body’s key defenses against toxins and microorganisms that can lead to serious and life-threatening conditions.”

CBD products have been a concern for the FDA for a long time now because they don’t have as rigorous of a process to get through safety standards as other health products do. This, along with the vulnerability of injection, seem to be the FDA’s main concerns.

Pico IV spoke to SFGate and says they are “working diligently to provide the FDA with the necessary information to resolve their concerns,” so it may make the most sense to stay away until the company can prove the safety of their product.

Read the letter from the FDA here.
