Another poll affirms the overwhelming support for legalizing marijuana in the US, and with a quasi-populist president in office, this could help set things in motion.
Emerson College found that 65% of 1,000 respondents would like legalization, compared to 35% who think it’s a bad idea. In Emerson College standards, this is a 5% increase from the last time they conducted the poll, in October.
Democrats are still much more in favor than Republicans, with 79% thinking it’s a good idea compared to Republicans at 49%. That gap, however, is closing in over the years as more libertarian voices start to hold more and more sway.
Spencer Kimball, executive director at Emerson College, was interviewed about the survey and spoke about the impact that Trump’s rescheduling could make. “If Trump was to make a decision and legalize it, boy, that could really turn things around on his favorability, which has been pretty stagnant for the last few months.”
Marijuana legalization has had an upward trend for decades now. Here’s a graph charting its trajectory, according to Gallup polls from each year back to 2000. We may have hit peak acceptance, but if Trump signals support, the numbers can keep going higher.
