Hemp and marijuana are entirely separate from each other in the eyes of the law. However, that doesn’t stop a new hemp-infused beverage to affect a drug test for Marines and Navy sailors.
An advisory was sent out to all members of the Navy that warns them against drinking Rockstar’s Passion Fruit drink with hemp seed oil infused. This drink does not contain any THC.
This is more than just a mistake on the part of drug testing across the military. Their reasoning for this overreach is that because hemp has yet to go through the official channels of the FDA, the lack of regulation may cause actual THC to fall into a batch of hemp along its way into the drink. It’s quite a stretch, but sheds lots of light on the very negative attitude our military has towards marijuana.
There’s also question as to if this even could cause a positive test to occur in the first place. The drug tests are for THC, and since there is none in these drinks, its detection would probably go unnoticed.
“Sailors and Marines are prohibited from using any product made or derived from hemp, including CBD, regardless of the product’s THC concentration, claimed or actual, and regardless of whether such product may lawfully be bought, sold, and used under the law applicable to civilians,” says the memo.
