The University of New England (UNE) is making strides into the cannabis industry with the launch of four online certificate programs aimed at developing professional skills for this rapidly growing field. UNE has partnered with California-based Green Flower, a cannabis education program that has collaborated with more than 50 colleges and universities across the country, marking UNE as the first institution in Maine to join forces with Green Flower.

The new certificate programs will cover critical areas such as business, health care and medicine, law and policy, and agriculture and horticulture—all within the context of the cannabis industry. These programs are tailored to meet the needs of entrepreneurs, health care providers, legal professionals, and growers interested in tapping into the expanding opportunities in cannabis. However, enrollment is open to anyone who wants to gain insight and expertise in this emerging market.

“The cannabis industry is one of the fastest growing market opportunities here in Maine and across the country,” said Beth Taylor-Nolan, dean of UNE Online. “As an institution committed to providing accessible, relevant, and affordable professional development and career education opportunities, UNE is excited to partner with Green Flower to train individuals interested in entering this dynamic industry.”

Each certificate track consists of three eight-week courses, with the first set of programs beginning in September. UNE highlighted that the curriculum for these programs was developed by leading experts, including doctors, lawyers, engineers, and agricultural specialists, ensuring that students receive a well-rounded education.

Maine has been a leader in cannabis reform, being one of the first states on the East Coast to legalize recreational use. In 2023, both medical and recreational cannabis sales in the state reached nearly $500 million. The Office of Cannabis Policy reported that Maine’s cannabis industry is booming, with 220 recreational retail stores, 133 cultivation operations, and 106 manufacturing facilities. In the medical sector, Maine supports 780 licensed medical providers, 4,200 employees, and 1,600 caregivers.

With its focus on health sciences, including Maine’s only medical and dental schools, UNE is uniquely positioned to lead the way in cannabis education and professional development.
