DEA Stops Plans to Ban New Psychedelic Compounds

Oh how far we’ve come.

5 new tryptamines have begun circulating in the US, and with that circulation comes interest from the DEA.

After an initial report by the Department of Health and Human Services, the DEA found that the tryptamines (4-OH-DiPT, 5-MeO-AMT, 5-MeO-MiPT, 5-MeO-DET, and DiPT) had no medical use and a high chance of being abused. Therefore they were taking the step, as they would have in the past on many occasions, to classify the hallucinogens as Schedule 1 drugs and therefore cut them off from society and making them much more difficult to study.

However, the reputation of the Controlled Substances Act has been greatly diminished within the last few years, and adding anything to the list will most certainly be met with a large amount of pushback, which is exactly what happened in this case.

For one, the decision seems rather premature, considering there has only been one death associated with any of these drugs, and that death was also associated with alcohol and an antidepressant. The DEA itself acknowledged that “it is unclear what role 5-MeO-AMT played in the death.”

And secondly, considering these are new tryptamines, much more research should be done on them before they get bottled up and put on the off-limits shelf. Once they are classified as Schedule I, research is much harder to come by.

So these are the reasons that this decision was met with so much pushback from citizens, and based on that reaction, the DEA first decided to hold a public hearing on the issue before any choice was made. That plan was then botched when the DEA changed their minds again and are, at this time, holding off on labeling the tryptamines as Schedule I.

Instead, they’re going to go back to the HHS and get more info on the five hallucinogens before any decision is made.

So this is a short term victory, but also an illuminating sign of how far we’ve come in the War on Drugs. Twenty years ago this decision would have been met with very little noise. It’s an encouraging moment we’re living in.
