Legal psychedelics passes California Senate

After passing through three different committees in the House, California’s psychedelic decriminalization bill has come out the other side, with the State Senate voting 21-16 in its favor.

Its next step is to be approved again by the House, then will land on Governor Newsom’s desk for him to sign into law.

To be clear, this bill does not legalize the sale of psychedelics. It’s a bill that is catered to decriminalizing the possession of the substances. Initially, the bill had language that would expunge the records of those with past offenses related to psychedelic possession. That, unfortunately, was stripped from the final bill.

The bill will also require the Department of Public Health to research the legalization of psychedelic substances in certain environment, including therapeutic. Their report is due in 2024.
