Mexico is giving legal weed yet another shot

Here we go again!

Although, to be fair, circumstances are a little different this time around.

In a new statement, Senator Julio Ramón Menchaca Salazar of the MORENA party has stated that marijuana will be taken up in the new session that starts today, after regular orders of business.

Here’s the tweet for those who can read it.

Given that Mexico has been down this road many times before only to result in the same muddled disagreement, one would look at this news in a pessimistic light. But this time, the context is a little different.

In June, the Supreme Court acted on its own and decriminalized marijuana across the country. That left the plant in a limbo position, where it is not an illegal substance, but no legislation has been put forth that enables cannabis’ legality. It remains here today.

The last we heard from the Senate, they had passed legislation that would legalize and regulate marijuana, but the process of agreeing on the details within this legislation was too difficult to come by before they were adjourned.

It doesn’t seem like all of those disagreements are entirely patched up. In a translation of Senator Salazar’s statement, he claims the opposite chamber sent the bill back to the full Senate “with inconsistencies, some of them unconstitutional.” Whether or not that’s true, it’s doubtful the opposite party would agree.

More to come! Just don’t hold your breath.
