Office of New York’s Governor says a legal marijuana market is a priority

A spokesperson for the newly appointed Governor of New York, Kathy Hochul, has affirmed their intentions to get the ball rolling on a marijuana market in the state.

Spokesperson Jordan Bennett told The New York Post that “nominating and confirming individuals with diverse experiences and subject matter expertise, who are representative of communities from across the state, to the Cannabis Control Board is a priority for Gov. Hochul.”

“We look forward to working with the legislature to keep this process moving forward.”

As a recap, former Governor Andrew Cuomo was dragging his feet on naming individuals to fill positions at the Office of Cannabis Management, therefore stalling the entire process of allowing dispensaries to open in the state. There was hope that with the new Governor would come a newfound focus on the objective.

According to the NYP, Hochul has already spoken to the state Senate Majority Leader and Assembly Speaker about her desire to fill positions.

As of now, New Yorkers are able to smoke marijuana wherever you are allowed tobacco, and it is legal to possess up to 3 ounces of the plant.
