Ohio Missed the Boat to Legalize in 2022, Will Try Again in 2023

Ohio has once again missed the boat to legalize marijuana in the year 2022. According to Cincinnati.com, members of the Coalition to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol filed a lawsuit in Franklin County accusing GOP lawmakers of trying to delay the legalization question until 2023. Due to the actions taken by the GOP, the group will have to try to get the question on the ballot in 2023.

The unfortunate thing about the delay is that the group submitted their proposal and signed petitions to the legislation earlier this year. Their petition had a significant number of signatures and has been in the works for quite some time.

This legalization effort is working to make marijuana completely legal for those in Ohio above the age of 21. Along with this age restriction, residents would also be allowed to possess up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana legally and grow their own plants. Marijuana sales would include a 10% tax rate which would be used to help with administrative costs, addiction treatment programs, dispensaries, and social equity programs.

Last Friday, the group settled their lawsuit. The settlement included having the petition be looked at by congressional lawmakers. The petition will be sent over on January 3rd and lawmakers will have 4 months to consider it.
