A new California law went through last year that allows local jurisdictions to open cannabis cafes, and San Francisco is trying to take them up on this.
The city’s Board of Supervisors along with the mayor in July approved an ordinance that would allow food and drinks to be served within a consumption area for dispensaries. This in effect creates a lounge, or a cannabis cafe.
Last week, the Office of Cannabis in San Francisco listed out some regulations for these areas. They include operation plans, employee training, security, inventory control, and more stipulations. They are now in a period of public feedback until September 25.
The law in San Francisco would require a new Cafe-specific permit for these businesses along with a cannabis consumption permit.

It’s unclear how fast this will speed through the legislation after the public hearing phase concludes, but hopefully we can see some Cannabis Cafes in San Francisco sprouting up early next year.
