They didn’t make a big announcement about it, but TSA is changing how it views marijuana in a subtle but important way.
Last month, the TSA website was updated to say that medical marijuana would be allowed in carry-on and checked bags.
TSA then reiterated that they aren’t necessarily looking for illegal substances, just anything that could be dangerous in the air. If they come across an illegal substance, then they deal with it. But the search isn’t focused on it.
This new language makes it seem more likely that agents will turn a blind eye to marijuana as opposed to making a big stink about it. Especially now that marijuana is slowly on its way to Schedule III, rules will probably be relaxing even more.
That being said, the risk is entirely up to ones own judgement.
