Actor Woody Harrelson recently found himself at the center of a marijuana-fueled misadventure that ended with him being kicked out of not one, but two bars—alongside an unexpected companion: the mother of fellow actor Matthew McConaughey.

The story surfaced during a recent episode of the podcast Where Everybody Knows Your Name, hosted by Ted Danson and Harrelson, where the trio swapped candid anecdotes about cannabis, aging and the occasionally chaotic consequences of getting high.

McConaughey, who has long been associated with stoner culture through roles such as his breakout performance in Dazed and Confused, recounted the incident with amusement. He said Harrelson and his mother share a mutual fondness—and that the pair were expelled from two establishments for smoking marijuana indoors. In one case, he said, their joint reportedly set off a fire alarm. In the other, staff simply told them the behavior was illegal and ordered them out.

Harrelson confirmed the account, adding that neither incident resulted in serious consequences. “Both times we got out of trouble,” he said.

While Harrelson remains closely tied to cannabis culture—both personally and professionally—McConaughey said his own relationship with marijuana has changed. Though he used cannabis in the past, he now avoids modern, high-potency products, explaining that they no longer agree with him.

“The new stuff does not agree with my constitution,” McConaughey said, describing how marijuana makes time feel distorted for him. He recalled falling out of trees while high and chipping his front teeth on multiple occasions while staring at the full moon.

Danson also shared his own cannabis memories, recounting an early experience smoking with his wife, actor Mary Steenburgen, during a group outing to hot springs. Danson joked that his entire night consisted of repeatedly submerging himself underwater, prompting Harrelson to dub him “a submarine.”

Beyond podcast banter, Harrelson has been an outspoken supporter of marijuana reform. He co-owns a Los Angeles dispensary with comedian Bill Maher and has advocated for policies expanding legal cannabis consumption spaces. In 2024, he publicly urged California Gov. Gavin Newsom to approve legislation legalizing marijuana cafes, which Newsom later signed into law.

Harrelson has also previously said cannabis helped him endure a dinner with President Donald Trump, further cementing his reputation as one of Hollywood’s most unabashed marijuana advocates.
