Biden Finally Comments on Marijuana Pardons

We’ve gotten very little word from President Biden about any more pardons or clemency for people in jail convicted of outdated marijuana offenses. In April, Biden granted clemency to 78 people, and that’s about it. While that was certainly a welcome move, it did go nearly as far as many were hoping.

But finally, after stepping off a helicopter two days ago, a news reporter from The New York Post asked the president if he thinks it’s right for people to be in jail for marijuana offenses.

“I don’t think anyone should be in prison for the use of marijuana. We’re working on the crime bill now,” President Biden replied.

It’s unclear which crime bill Biden is talking about, but a sweeping bill that tackles how the public is policed is an extremely welcome proposal, and if it also includes pardons for nonviolent drug offenses, this could also go a long way in flipping the very negative public perception Biden is dealing with recently.
