Michigan Recalls Thousands Of Cannabis Products Over Potential Health Risks

More than 20,000 marijuana products have been pulled from dispensary shelves across Michigan after state regulators flagged health concerns tied to vape cartridges containing medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil. The Michigan Cannabis Regulatory Agency (CRA) announced the recall on Tuesday, urging customers to immediately stop using the products.

The recall affects roughly 26,000 vape cartridges distributed by Sky Cannabis LLC, a Warren-based company, under the Motor City Cannacarts and RIPZ brand names. According to the CRA’s notice, laboratory tests detected MCT oil in several products, prompting officials to issue a statewide advisory.

Specific items subject to recall include the Georgia Pie and Confetti Cake flavors of Motor City Cannacarts, along with RIPZ’s Peach Cobbler, Wedding Cake, Ice Cream Man, and Tropic Thunder varieties. Customers who purchased these vapes after November 1, 2024, are urged to verify their purchases against Metrc Tag numbers available online.

MCT oil, commonly derived from coconut or palm oil, is widely used in supplements and food products. While safe for oral consumption, inhalation of aerosolized MCT oil may pose risks to respiratory health, according to a CRA advisory issued in April.

“Consumers with a recalled vape should return it to the sales location from where it was purchased or dispose of it safely,” the CRA wrote in its recall notice. “Consumers who have experienced adverse reactions should report symptoms to their healthcare providers and file a report with the CRA.”

The announcement comes as cannabis oversight agencies nationwide grapple with growing concerns about product safety. Earlier this year, Arizona regulators issued a recall of cannabis items due to fungus contamination, underscoring the challenges facing a rapidly expanding industry.

Sky Cannabis said it is cooperating fully with regulators to retrieve the affected products and pledged to ensure safe disposal. The CRA directed licensed retailers to immediately halt sales of the identified cartridges and notify customers who may have purchased them.

With more states legalizing marijuana, experts say product recalls are likely to remain a recurring issue as regulators balance consumer safety with industry growth.
